Market Overview

Albania's national rail network, operated by Hekurudha Shqiptare (HSH), has contracted significantly over the past three decades, with many lines closed and passenger services heavily reduced. The remaining network connects Tirana and Durrës to several inland cities. A revival of Albanian rail is planned under EU accession commitments and Western Balkans connectivity agreements. The Tirana–Durrës metropolitan rail corridor is the highest priority, with studies underway for a modern commuter rail or light rail link between the capital and the main Adriatic port. Albania is also part of the planned Trans-Balkan rail corridor linking Central Europe to Greece and Turkey. EU pre-accession funds (IPA) and European Investment Bank financing are expected to support rehabilitation. Albania's growing tourism sector and rapid urbanisation around Tirana increase the case for improved urban rail.
