Market Overview
Azerbaijan's Baku Metro is the oldest in the South Caucasus region and is being modernised with new rolling stock and station upgrades. The country is investing in its national rail network through Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), with new rolling stock and infrastructure improvements on intercity routes. Azerbaijan's strategic position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes rail connectivity a national priority. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway, connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, became operational in 2017, creating an alternative rail corridor between Asia and Europe bypassing Russia. Baku's hosting of the COP29 climate summit in 2024 has raised the profile of sustainable transport investment. Chinese and European companies have been active in Azerbaijani rail procurement.
