Market Overview

Belarus operates an extensive national rail network as Belarusian Railways (BCh), a key transit corridor for freight moving between Russia and Western Europe and between the Baltic states and Ukraine. The network has historically been a major route on the China–Europe rail freight corridor. Western sanctions following the 2020 political crisis and Russia's invasion of Ukraine have significantly disrupted transit traffic and limited Western investment. Minsk has a metro system with two lines and extensions under planning. Belarus is closely integrated with the Russian rail system, and Chinese rolling stock has been introduced. The country's rail sector is increasingly oriented toward Russia and China as Western partners have withdrawn. Freight transit revenues remain important, and Belarus is seeking to develop alternative transit routes through its territory.
