Market Overview
Bhutan has no operational rail network. The small Himalayan kingdom relies entirely on road transport, with connections to India's rail network at border crossing points. India has conducted feasibility studies for rail links connecting Bhutan to the Indian broad-gauge network, with proposed crossings at multiple border points. A Bhutan–India rail connection would primarily serve freight needs — facilitating exports of hydroelectric power equipment, minerals, and agricultural products — and reduce the country's dependence on road transport through difficult mountain terrain. Bhutan's development philosophy of Gross National Happiness emphasises environmental sustainability, which could support electrified rail as a low-impact transport mode. Any rail development in Bhutan is expected to be financed and built with Indian government support.
