Market Overview

Bolivia is pursuing the Bioceánico Rail Corridor, an ambitious transcontinental rail project intended to connect Brazil's Atlantic coast to Peru's Pacific ports through Bolivian territory. The corridor would open new export routes for Bolivia's lithium, minerals, and agricultural products. Bolivia's current rail network consists of two isolated systems — the Andean and Eastern networks — operated by Empresa Ferroviaria Oriental and Empresa Ferroviaria Andina. Bolivia is also studying rail connections to Chile's ports to recover historic access to the Pacific lost after the War of the Pacific. Chinese companies have been involved in feasibility studies for the Bioceánico corridor. Bolivia's lithium reserves — the world's largest — are creating new demand for reliable export rail infrastructure in a country where road transport dominates.
