Market Overview
Bulgaria's National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC) manages the national rail network, with BDZ operating passenger services. The network is an important corridor for freight and passengers between Central Europe, Turkey, and the Middle East. Bulgaria is investing in modernisation of key corridors with EU cohesion funds, including upgraded signalling and track rehabilitation on the Sofia–Plovdiv–Istanbul and Sofia–Varna routes. Sofia's metro is expanding, with new lines and stations under construction. Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and Danube border make rail freight connections critical for its trade. The country faces challenges of declining passenger numbers on regional lines and ageing rolling stock. EU accession obligations drive alignment with European rail interoperability standards. Chinese rolling stock companies have supplied locomotives to BDZ.
