Market Overview

Myanmar (Burma) Railways operates a broad network of narrow-gauge lines connecting major cities including Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Bagan. The colonial-era infrastructure is ageing and in need of significant investment. The Yangon Circular Railway provides commuter services in the commercial capital. Under the China–Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), new standard gauge rail lines connecting Mandalay to the Chinese border at Muse were planned, with Chinese companies conducting extensive feasibility work. The 2021 military coup severely disrupted foreign investment and infrastructure development. Rail rehabilitation remains a stated government priority, but international financing has dried up amid sanctions and political uncertainty. Myanmar's strategic geography — bordering China, India, Thailand, Laos, and Bangladesh — gives its rail network potential as a regional transit corridor once political conditions allow investment to resume.
