Market Overview
Burundi has no operational national rail network. The small, landlocked, and densely populated country in Central Africa relies on road transport and Lake Tanganyika ferry services for freight and passenger movement. Access to rail networks in Tanzania and the DRC is possible via road connections to border crossings. Burundi is a stakeholder in regional rail planning through the East African Community, particularly projects related to the central and southern corridors connecting to the Tanzanian SGR. The country's mining sector — nickel, cobalt, and other minerals — could generate freight demand if rail connectivity to export ports improves. Any rail development in Burundi would likely be part of a broader regional network investment rather than a standalone domestic project.
