Market Overview
Cambodia operates two rehabilitated rail lines managed by Royal Railways, connecting Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville on the south coast and to the Thai border at Poipet in the northwest. The lines were restored with Australian aid financing after decades of disuse following the Khmer Rouge era. A commuter rail service operates between Phnom Penh and the airport. Cambodia is studying urban rail options for the capital as vehicle congestion increases with rapid economic growth. The Singapore–Kunming Rail Link (SKRL) passes through Cambodia, and a future standard gauge upgrade of the existing network is envisioned as part of this regional corridor. Chinese investment in Cambodia's economy and infrastructure has been significant, and Chinese companies are well-positioned for future rail procurement. Phnom Penh's growing population and expanding manufacturing sector are increasing demand for improved urban and inter-city connectivity.
