Market Overview
Canada has an extensive freight rail network operated primarily by two Class I railways — Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) — which together form the backbone of North American freight logistics. VIA Rail Canada operates long-distance passenger services, most notably the Canadian transcontinental train. Urban rail is growing, with major investments in Toronto (Ontario Line metro, Eglinton Crosstown LRT), Vancouver (SkyTrain extensions), Montreal (Réseau express métropolitain), and Ottawa (LRT). Canada is investing in high-frequency rail on the Quebec–Windsor corridor, the country's most densely populated region. Canadian cities are procuring new light rail and metro rolling stock from Alstom, Bombardier (Alstom), and other global suppliers. Canada's rail freight sector is a model for private railway operations globally.
