Market Overview
Costa Rica operated a suburban rail network in San José — the Tren Urbano — which was rehabilitated and reopened in phases. The service connects San José to Cartago and Heredia, operated by INCOFER (Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles). Costa Rica is studying an electric light rail or BRT system for the Greater Metropolitan Area to address severe traffic congestion. The country's commitment to carbon neutrality makes electrified rail an attractive option for urban transport. International financing from multilateral banks and the United States has been explored for urban rail expansion. Costa Rica's narrow-gauge heritage rail network includes some scenic tourist routes. The government has identified urban rail as a priority investment to improve mobility in the densely populated Central Valley region.
