Market Overview
The Dominican Republic operates the Santo Domingo Metro, an urban rail system with two operational lines serving the capital. Line 1 runs north-south and Line 2 runs east-west, together serving key areas of the city. A third line has been studied. The metro was built with financing and construction support from Spanish companies and the Spanish government. Santo Domingo's rapid urbanisation and severe traffic congestion have increased demand for expanded urban rail. The country has no intercity rail network. Dominican Republic's tourism-driven economy and growing middle class support continued investment in urban mobility. The government has explored additional metro extensions and potential BRT corridors to complement the existing metro. Chinese and European suppliers have expressed interest in future rolling stock and infrastructure contracts.
