Market Overview
Ecuador's Tren Ecuador is primarily a heritage and tourist rail service, operating scenic routes through the Andes including the famous Devil's Nose switchback and Nariz del Diablo sections. The service was restored and expanded in the early 2010s but has faced operational challenges. Ecuador has no active urban metro system, though Quito operates a Bus Rapid Transit network and a Metro de Quito underground line opened in 2023. The Quito Metro Line 1 is the country's first modern urban rail system, built with Spanish financing and Alstom rolling stock. Ecuador's challenging topography — the Andes, Amazon, and Pacific coast — makes rail infrastructure expensive. The government has studied inter-city rail projects but road transport dominates the national logistics network.
