Market Overview
Finland is investing in its national rail network under the management of Väylä (Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency), with VR Group operating passenger services. Key upgrades include the Tampere–Helsinki main line capacity improvement and the Turku rail link. A planned tunnel under the Gulf of Finland — the Helsinki–Tallinn Tunnel — would connect Finland directly to Rail Baltica and the European standard gauge network. Helsinki's metro is expanding with the Länsimetro western extension. Finland is also studying high-speed rail between Helsinki and Tampere. The country's long distances and sparse population outside the Helsinki metropolitan area make rail economically challenging for many routes. VR Group is active internationally as a rail operator and logistics company. Finland's Arctic expertise in rail operations in extreme cold conditions is referenced globally.
