Market Overview
Guatemala has no operational national rail network. The country's historic rail lines were abandoned in the 1990s. Guatemala City is studying urban rapid transit options — including a metro or BRT — to address severe traffic congestion in one of Central America's largest cities. Multilateral financing from the IDB and World Bank has been explored for urban mobility projects. Guatemala's colonial-era railway assets, including historic stations, have been repurposed for cultural uses in some cities. Regional rail connectivity within Central America is discussed in long-term planning documents but has not advanced. Guatemala's mountainous terrain and dispersed population centres make intercity rail economically challenging. Urban rail investment in the capital is the most viable near-term rail opportunity.
