Market Overview

Hungary is modernising its national rail network under MÁV (Magyar Államvasutak), with EU-funded upgrades to key intercity corridors and regional lines. Budapest's metro system is one of Central Europe's oldest, with Line 1 being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. New rolling stock and signalling upgrades are being implemented across the network. The Budapest–Belgrade high-speed rail project, financed and built by Chinese companies under a BRI agreement, is under construction and is one of the most prominent Chinese rail projects in the European Union. Hungary has maintained close economic ties with China, making it a key entry point for Chinese rail technology into the EU market. A new suburban rail development programme for Budapest is also underway. Hungary's geographic position makes it a critical transit corridor for freight moving between Western Europe and the Balkans.
