Market Overview
Italy has a well-developed high-speed rail network, with Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) operating the Frecciarossa and Italo services between major cities at up to 300 km/h. The Turin-Lyon Alpine Base Tunnel, under construction with France, will create a new high-capacity cross-border freight and passenger corridor. Southern Italy's rail network is being upgraded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with EU funds supporting electrification and modernisation. Urban metro systems in Milan, Rome, and Naples are expanding. Italy's rail industry includes Hitachi Rail (formerly Finmeccanica/AnsaldoBreda) and Wabtec (formerly Faiveley), contributing to global rail supply chains. FS has also been involved in rail concessions internationally.
