Market Overview
Japan is the birthplace of high-speed rail, with the Shinkansen network now spanning over 3,000 km and connecting major cities from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Maglev technology is under development on the Chuo Shinkansen line, with commercial operation targeted in the coming decades. Japan's private rail operators run some of the world's most punctual and profitable urban rail systems. JR companies continue to invest in rolling stock renewal, station upgrades, and new route development. Overseas, Japanese rail companies and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) are active in exporting Shinkansen technology and rail expertise to India, Thailand, the UK, and other markets. Japan is a major competitor to Chinese rail companies in Southeast Asia and South Asia.
