Market Overview
Jordan's National Railways (Hejaz Jordan Railway) operates a historic narrow-gauge line primarily used for phosphate freight exports — phosphate being Jordan's most significant rail commodity. Aqaba, Jordan's Red Sea port, has a dedicated industrial railway serving the phosphate and potash export terminals. Amman is planning a Bus Rapid Transit network, and a metro or urban rail system for the capital has been studied for years. Jordan's limited oil resources and reliance on imports make efficient freight rail for minerals a national economic priority. A planned passenger rail link between Amman and Aqaba has been studied with Gulf financing. Jordan's position as a transit country between the Gulf, the Levant, and Europe gives rail connectivity a strategic dimension beyond domestic demand.
