Market Overview

Kenya is East Africa's leading rail investment destination. The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connecting Mombasa to Nairobi was completed in 2017, with the Nairobi-Naivasha extension operational since 2019. The SGR was built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRRC) with financing from China Exim Bank. Nairobi Commuter Rail is undergoing rehabilitation, with plans to integrate it with the expanding urban transport network. Kenya's National Transport Policy envisions further SGR extensions toward the Uganda border and northern corridor. The Nairobi Bus Rapid Transit network complements rail investments in the capital. Kenya is a key transit corridor for landlocked East African nations, making rail freight a strategic priority for regional economic integration.
