Market Overview
Lebanon's rail network, once one of the Levant's most extensive, has been entirely non-operational since the civil war era. The Lebanese Republic Railways (CEL) infrastructure — including tracks, tunnels, and stations — remains largely in place but is unused and deteriorating. Multiple studies and proposals for rail revival have been produced over the decades, particularly for a coastal line between Beirut, Tripoli, and the Syrian border. Lebanon's severe economic crisis, political paralysis, and the destruction caused by the 2020 Beirut port explosion have made rail investment a low priority. However, the network's restoration is referenced in long-term reconstruction plans supported by the World Bank and international partners. Any rail revival would be contingent on broader economic and political stabilisation.
