Market Overview
Lithuania is a key participant in the Rail Baltica project, the new standard gauge rail line connecting the Baltic states to the European rail network. The Vilnius connection to the main Rail Baltica line is under planning and development. Lithuania's existing rail network uses Soviet-era broad gauge and connects Vilnius to Kaunas, Klaipėda (the main Baltic port), and the Latvian and Belarusian borders. Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (LG) operates the national network. Rail freight through Lithuania has been significantly affected by the closure of transit routes through Belarus and Russia following sanctions. The country is investing in rail connections to Poland and to the Rail Baltica corridor. Klaipėda's port rail connections are critical for Lithuanian and regional freight exports.
