Market Overview

Malawi's rail network, managed by Central East African Railways (CEAR) under concession, connects the country from north to south and provides access to the Mozambican port of Nacala via the Nacala Corridor. The network is a critical export route for Malawi's tobacco, tea, and other agricultural products. The Nacala Logistics Corridor, developed by Vale and other investors, has improved the southern section's capacity. Malawi is studying a link to Tanzania's rail network through the TAZARA corridor. The country's landlocked position and reliance on agricultural exports make rail freight infrastructure economically vital. Multilateral financing from the African Development Bank and bilateral partners has supported rail rehabilitation. Malawi's limited fiscal resources require external financing for any major rail investment.
