Market Overview
Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's most active rail markets, anchored by the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network in Greater Kuala Lumpur. The Putrajaya Line (MRT2) opened in 2023, while the MRT3 Circle Line is in procurement. The LRT3 Shah Alam line and Penang LRT project are among the pipeline investments. Kuala Lumpur's commuter rail network, operated by KTM, connects the capital to major cities. Malaysia's rail ambitions include cross-border links with Singapore and planned extensions to connect secondary cities. The government has identified rail as a priority infrastructure sector under successive Malaysia Plans, with significant financing from domestic and multilateral sources. Chinese contractors and rolling stock suppliers have been active participants in Malaysian rail projects.
