Market Overview
Malta has no national rail network. The island nation had a historic railway that operated in the early twentieth century but was closed in 1931. Malta relies on bus services as the primary public transport mode. Studies for a light rail or mass transit system connecting Valletta to other parts of the island have been conducted, driven by severe traffic congestion. Malta's small size — approximately 316 square kilometres — and dense road network have historically made rail investment difficult to justify. However, growing population pressure and tourist volumes are reviving the urban rail debate. EU funding could potentially support a light metro or tram system if political commitment emerges. Malta's flat terrain in the south and hilly north present different engineering requirements for any future rail system.
