Mongolia's rail network is operated by Ulaanbaatar Railway, a joint venture between Mongolia and Russia. The Trans-Mongolian Railway — part of the historic Trans-Siberian route — runs from the Russian border through Ulaanbaatar to the Chinese border at Zamyn-Uud, serving as a critical freight corridor between China and Europe. Mongolia is investing in new rail lines to open up its vast mineral deposits, particularly coal from the Tavan Tolgoi field.
