Market Overview

Mongolia's rail network is operated by Ulaanbaatar Railway, a joint venture between Mongolia and Russia. The Trans-Mongolian Railway — part of the historic Trans-Siberian route — runs from the Russian border through Ulaanbaatar to the Chinese border at Zamyn-Uud, serving as a critical freight corridor between China and Europe. Mongolia is investing in new rail lines to open up its vast mineral deposits, particularly coal from the Tavan Tolgoi field. A dedicated coal railway connecting Tavan Tolgoi to the Chinese border is operational. Mongolia is studying additional lines to serve other mining regions. Chinese and Russian rolling stock and rail technology dominate the Mongolian market. The country's extreme continental climate and vast distances between settlements make rail the backbone of long-distance freight logistics.
