Market Overview
Montenegro's main rail line is the historic Belgrade–Bar Railway, connecting Serbia to Montenegro's Adriatic port of Bar through spectacular mountain scenery including the famous Mala Rijeka viaduct. The line is operated by Željeznice Crne Gore (ŽCG) and is an important freight and passenger route. The government is studying the modernisation and potential high-speed upgrade of the rail network as part of EU accession preparations. Montenegro is also a potential participant in the Adriatic–Ionian Rail Corridor connecting Central Europe to southern Italy and Greece via the Adriatic coast. EU IPA funds and Chinese financing — China Exim Bank provided a loan for the first section of a planned Bar–Boljare motorway — are part of Montenegro's infrastructure financing mix. Rail connectivity is seen as important for tourism development along the Adriatic coast.
