Market Overview

Mozambique operates strategically important rail corridors linking landlocked neighbours to its Indian Ocean ports. The Nacala Corridor, connecting Malawi and Zambia to the Port of Nacala, has been developed by Vale and other mining investors and is among Africa's most significant rail freight investments. The Beira Corridor links Zimbabwe and Zambia to the Port of Beira. Maputo's port is served by rail connections to South Africa and eSwatini. A planned Moatize–Macuse export corridor for coal from the Tete province represents a major future investment. Mozambique's rail sector has attracted investment from Brazilian mining company Vale, Indian steel interests, and multilateral development banks. The country's extensive coastline makes it a natural gateway for regional freight, with rail as the backbone of its port connectivity strategy.
