Market Overview
Myanmar Railways operates an extensive but ageing narrow-gauge network covering much of the country, including connections to major cities such as Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Bagan. The Yangon Circular Railway provides commuter services around the capital. Rehabilitation and gauge conversion to standard gauge are long-term national goals. The Mandalay–Muse railway, connecting to the Chinese border, is a priority project under the China–Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC). Chinese companies have conducted extensive feasibility studies for new standard gauge lines. Myanmar's political situation following the 2021 military coup has significantly disrupted foreign investment and infrastructure financing. When political conditions stabilise, Myanmar's position as a critical land bridge between China, India, and Southeast Asia gives rail connectivity a major strategic value.
