Market Overview
The Netherlands operates one of Europe's most intensively used rail networks, with NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) providing frequent intercity and intercity direct services across the country. ProRail, the infrastructure manager, is investing in capacity expansions, ETCS signalling, and new stations. Amsterdam's metro is expanding with the Noord/Zuidlijn and further extensions. The country is a significant hub for high-speed rail, with Thalys (now Eurostar) and Intercity Direct services connecting to Belgium, France, and Germany. The Netherlands is home to several significant rail technology companies and research institutes. Freight rail through Rotterdam — Europe's largest port — is a major economic artery, with the Betuwe Route dedicated freight line connecting the port to Germany. The country's flat terrain and urban density make rail the preferred mode for inter-city travel.
