Market Overview
Niger has no operational national rail network. The landlocked Sahel country relies on road transport for domestic movement and on routes through neighbouring countries — primarily Nigeria via Kano — to reach seaports. A proposed trans-Saharan railway connecting North Africa to West Africa has been discussed in regional forums for decades, with Niger as a key transit country. Niger's uranium, gold, and oil resources generate freight demand that rail could serve. Political instability following the 2023 coup has disrupted relationships with Western partners but has maintained ties with Russia and China. Any rail development in Niger would require a stable security environment and substantial external financing. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) railway master plan envisions Niger as part of a wider regional network.
