Market Overview
North Macedonia's Makedonski Železnici (MŽ) operates the national rail network, a key section of Corridor X connecting Central Europe through Serbia to Greece and Turkey. The government is investing in track rehabilitation and ETCS signalling upgrades with EU IPA support. A rail link to Bulgaria is being improved to enhance east-west connectivity. North Macedonia is an EU candidate state, and transport infrastructure upgrades are part of EU accession requirements. Skopje, the capital, does not have a metro or tram system, with buses serving urban transport needs. The country's position as a transit corridor for freight between Central and Southeast Europe gives its rail network regional strategic value. Chinese rolling stock has been considered for fleet renewal alongside European alternatives.
