Market Overview

Norway is investing in rail modernisation and electrification under its National Transport Plan. The InterCity programme aims to build new double-track rail lines connecting Oslo to surrounding cities including Hamar, Fredrikstad, and Tønsberg. Oslo's T-bane (metro) and tram networks are being upgraded with new rolling stock. Norway is also studying high-speed rail between its major cities as part of decarbonisation commitments. Bane NOR, the rail infrastructure manager, oversees a substantial investment programme. Norway's challenging terrain — mountains, fjords, and extreme weather — makes rail engineering technically demanding and expensive. The country's oil fund provides financial capacity for infrastructure investment. Norwegian rail expertise is respected internationally, and the country has been involved in rail advisory roles in developing markets.
