Market Overview
Oman has been planning a national rail network for over a decade, with the Oman National Railway (ONR) project intended to connect major cities and industrial zones across the Sultanate. The planned network includes freight and passenger corridors linking Muscat, Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah, as well as a connection to the UAE and the wider GCC Railway. A Muscat metro system has also been studied. Progress on the ONR has been phased due to fiscal constraints, but the government continues to treat rail as a priority under its diversification agenda. The Port of Duqm and the Sohar industrial corridor are identified as key freight rail destinations. Chinese, European, and Gulf contractors have participated in technical studies and early procurement processes.
