Market Overview
Peru is developing urban rail in Lima and Callao through the Lima Metro system. Line 1 is operational, while Line 2 (an underground east-west crossing of the capital) is under construction with financing from European and multilateral sources. Additional metro lines are in planning. The country also operates an historic tourist rail service to Machu Picchu through PeruRail. Peru's mining sector has extensive private narrow-gauge rail operations for ore transport. The government has studied inter-city rail corridors connecting Lima to regional cities. Peru's difficult terrain — the Andes and Amazon — presents engineering challenges but also opportunities for specialised rail solutions. Chinese, Spanish, and French companies are among those active in Peruvian rail procurement.
