Market Overview
Portugal is planning a major high-speed rail network expansion under the Ferrovia 2020 and subsequent investment programmes. The Lisbon–Porto high-speed rail line is the flagship project, with the aim of connecting the two main cities in under an hour. Portugal is also developing high-speed connections toward the Spanish border to integrate with the Iberian and European high-speed network. Lisbon's Metro is expanding with new lines and station extensions. Porto's Metro system is one of the most extensive light metro networks in the Iberian Peninsula and continues to grow. EU cohesion and recovery funds provide substantial financing for Portuguese rail investment. CP (Comboios de Portugal) is renewing its intercity rolling stock. Portugal's Atlantic position and tourism economy make rail a key mode for both domestic mobility and international visitors.
