Market Overview
Romania is undertaking a significant rail modernisation programme supported by EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and cohesion funds. CFR Călători operates passenger services on a national network that requires extensive upgrading after decades of underinvestment. Key corridors — including Bucharest to the borders with Hungary and Moldova — are being upgraded for higher speeds. Bucharest's metro system is expanding with new lines and extensions. Romania is also investing in rolling stock renewal, with new electric multiple units and locomotives on order. The country's position as a key transit route between Central Europe, the Black Sea, and Ukraine gives its rail infrastructure growing strategic importance. The Bucharest–Constanța and Bucharest–Cluj corridors are identified as priority high-speed routes for future development.
