San Marino has no national rail network. The microstate enclave within Italy relies on road transport, with the nearest rail connections at Rimini on Italy's Adriatic coast, served by Trenitalia. A historic electric tramway connected San Marino to Rimini from 1932 to 1944, when it was destroyed during World War II. Proposals to revive a rail or funicular link between Rimini and San Marino's historic centre have been discussed periodically, primarily as a tourist attraction and sustainable transport initiative. San Marino's income from tourism and financial services provides the means for such a project if political will aligns. The short distance involved — approximately 24 kilometres — makes a revival technically and financially manageable.
