Market Overview

Serbia is implementing a major rail modernisation programme with significant Chinese and European financing. The Belgrade–Budapest high-speed rail line, a flagship Belt and Road Initiative project in Europe, is under construction on the Serbian side, with Chinese state companies as the main contractors. The Belgrade–Novi Sad section is operational. Serbia is also upgrading the Corridor X route — the main north-south freight and passenger artery — with EU support. Belgrade is expanding its suburban rail network and studying an underground metro or urban rail system for the capital. Serbia's rail sector has attracted both Chinese investment (rolling stock, construction) and European financing (EU IPA funds). The country's candidacy for EU membership adds regulatory pressure to align rail standards with the EU's interoperability requirements.
