Market Overview

Slovakia's Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR) manages the national rail network, with ZSSK operating passenger services. The network connects Bratislava to Košice and to the Czech, Austrian, Hungarian, Polish, and Ukrainian borders. Slovakia is investing in track upgrades and rolling stock renewal with EU cohesion funds. Bratislava's tram and trolleybus network is being modernised. A planned metro or underground tram for the capital has been studied. Slovakia is an important rail transit corridor for freight between Western Europe and Ukraine, with the Bratislava–Žilina–Košice main line carrying significant volumes. The country is also a major automotive manufacturing hub, generating substantial rail freight traffic. Slovak rail rolling stock requirements have been met by Škoda Transportation, Stadler, and other European suppliers.
