Market Overview
Somalia has no operational rail network. Decades of civil conflict destroyed what limited colonial-era infrastructure existed. The country is in the process of rebuilding basic road and port infrastructure as political stability gradually improves in some regions. Rail connectivity to Ethiopia and Kenya is a very long-term aspiration tied to regional integration under the East African Community and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The Port of Berbera in Somaliland has been developed with UAE investment, and transport connectivity to the Ethiopian hinterland — including potential rail — has been discussed. Any rail development in Somalia proper would require sustained security improvements, governance capacity, and external financing far beyond current conditions.
