Market Overview
South Africa has the African continent's most developed rail network, operated primarily by Transnet Freight Rail and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). After years of fleet deterioration, PRASA awarded a major rolling stock procurement programme, with CRRC winning a significant contract for new electric multiple units. The Gautrain rapid rail link between Johannesburg, Pretoria, and OR Tambo International Airport remains the flagship commuter rail project. The Western Cape government is pursuing the Cape Town rail revival. Transnet is investing in general freight rail capacity, including the iron ore and coal export corridors. South Africa's rail sector is undergoing restructuring with private sector participation being introduced to improve freight efficiency and competitiveness.
