Market Overview

South Sudan has no operational rail network. The world's youngest country, which gained independence in 2011, has extremely limited transport infrastructure. The country's oil fields — the primary economic asset — are connected to Sudan via a pipeline, and most freight moves by road or river. A rail link connecting South Sudan to the East African Standard Gauge Railway network via Uganda has been studied, which would give the landlocked country access to the Port of Mombasa. South Sudan's oil revenues, when stable, provide potential financing capacity. Ending decades of conflict and building basic governance capacity are prerequisites for any large-scale infrastructure investment. Regional rail connectivity through the East African Community framework is the most likely vehicle for future rail development in South Sudan.
