Market Overview
Sri Lanka Railways operates a network connecting Colombo to major cities including Kandy, Galle, Jaffna, and Batticaloa. The system, originally built during the British colonial era, serves both commuter and intercity passengers. Colombo's commuter rail is being upgraded with new rolling stock, partially financed by Japan. A Colombo Light Rail Transit project was agreed with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) but was cancelled by the Sri Lankan government in 2020 amid fiscal concerns. The project has since been revived in modified form. Sri Lanka's economic crisis has constrained infrastructure investment. The government is seeking multilateral and bilateral financing for rolling stock renewal and electrification. Sri Lanka's tourism sector creates demand for improved intercity rail, particularly on the scenic coastal and hill country routes.
