Market Overview
Sudan Railway Corporation operates one of Africa's largest rail networks by route length, though much of it is in poor condition. The network connects Khartoum to Port Sudan on the Red Sea and extends to major cities in the north and west. Rail rehabilitation is a stated government priority, with Chinese companies having studied multiple line upgrades. Port Sudan's strategic location on the Red Sea makes the Khartoum–Port Sudan corridor a critical national freight route. Sudan's vast agricultural and mineral resources — gold, oil, livestock — create latent freight demand that a functioning rail network could serve. Political instability has severely affected the pace of investment. China, the Gulf states, and Russia have all explored infrastructure partnerships with Sudan's successive governments.
