Market Overview

Taiwan operates a world-class high-speed rail system — the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) — connecting Taipei to Kaohsiung in the west of the island in approximately 90 minutes. The THSR was built using Japanese Shinkansen technology and has been a commercial and operational success. Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) operates the conventional rail network, which is undergoing a major transformation including underground tunnels in major cities and new rolling stock procurement. The Taipei MRT is expanding with new lines serving the metropolitan area. Kaohsiung also operates a metro system. Taiwan is a significant market for rolling stock, with major procurement programmes attracting bids from Japanese, European, and Korean manufacturers. The island's advanced manufacturing sector supports a domestic rail supply chain for components and systems.
