Market Overview

Tajikistan's rail network is fragmented due to the country's mountainous geography, with different sections disconnected from each other and dependent on transit through neighbouring countries. Tajik Railways operates the main routes, but connectivity to international markets is constrained. A new tunnel — the Shariston Tunnel — has improved north-south connectivity within the country. Tajikistan is a priority country for the regional rail connectivity programme linking Central Asia to South Asia via Afghanistan. The proposed Trans-Afghan Railway would connect Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to Pakistan's rail network through Afghanistan. Chinese investment in Tajikistan's infrastructure has grown significantly, and rail links to China via Kyrgyzstan are under feasibility study. The country's energy resources and aluminium production create freight demand that better rail connectivity could serve.
