Market Overview
Latvia is a central participant in the Rail Baltica project, the most significant rail infrastructure investment in Baltic history. The new standard gauge line passes through Latvia, with a main station in Riga and connections to Estonia in the north and Lithuania in the south. Rail Baltica will integrate the Baltic states with the European standard gauge network for the first time, enabling direct train services to Warsaw, Berlin, and beyond. Latvia's existing network uses Soviet broad gauge, operated by Latvijas dzelzceļš (LDz). Cross-border freight through Latvia has been significantly redirected following sanctions on Russia and Belarus. The Riga port's rail connections are being adapted for the changing freight flows. Riga's tram network is one of the largest in the Baltic region and is being modernised.
