Market Overview
Togo has a limited narrow-gauge rail network in the south of the country, connecting Lomé (the capital and main port) to phosphate and cement production areas. The network is primarily freight-oriented, serving Togo's phosphate exports — one of the country's main revenue sources. Passenger services are minimal. Lomé's port is an important gateway for landlocked neighbours Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, and improved rail connectivity to these countries is a long-term aspiration. The West African rail network plans envision connections through Togo. Togo's government has attracted Chinese investment in phosphate mining and associated infrastructure. Rail rehabilitation and potential extensions are linked to phosphate sector development and Lomé's ambition to grow as a regional hub port.
