Market Overview
Turkmenistan has invested heavily in rail infrastructure using revenues from its vast natural gas reserves. Turkmenistan Railways operates a modern network, and the country has constructed new lines including the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Tajikistan (TAT) railway, extending rail connectivity southward. A cross-Caspian rail ferry connection links Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan, forming part of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR or Middle Corridor) between China and Europe. Turkmenistan's rail sector is relatively modern compared to its Central Asian neighbours, with Chinese-supplied rolling stock in operation. The country's authoritarian government prioritises rail as a symbol of national development. Ashgabat's new international airport and city infrastructure reflect significant state investment in transport. Turkmenistan's position between the Caspian Sea and Afghanistan makes it a key transit node for regional connectivity.
